In accordance with the policies approved by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), the contact information a domain is registered with must be valid and accurate all the time. What’s more, this information is openly available on WHOIS sites and while this may not be a problem for firms, it may not be very acceptable for individuals, since everyone can view their names and their personal email and home addresses, particularly in times when identity fraud isn’t that uncommon. This is the reason why registrars have introduced a service that hides the details of their customers without altering them. The service is called Whois Privacy Protection. If it is activated, people will view the details of the registrar company, not those of the domain owner, if they make a WHOIS lookup. The Whois Privacy Protection service is supported by all generic TLD extensions, but it’s still not possible to conceal your private info with certain country-code extensions.
